A clinical and histopathologic study of 112 cases of basal cell carcinoma of the skin

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin malignancy and a slowly growning neoplasm that develop often on sun-exposed skin. A clinical and histopathologic survey was done on 112 cases of basal cell carcinoma filed at Department of
Dermatology,
Chonnam University Hospital during past four years from January, 1989 to October, 1992.
@ES The results were summerized as follows:
@EN 1. The ratio of men to women was 1.3:1.
2. Eighty-two percent of the patients with BCC were older than the age of 50 years with the mean age of 62.3 years.
3. Almost of cases was located on the face with 86.5%, especially on the nose(35.7%), periorbital (19.6%), and cheek(19.6%).
4. The duration between the presumbed time of onset and the time of visiting the hospital was more than 2 years in 88.4% of all patients, and an average of 4.3 years.
5. Farmers and fishers in occupation were most common, and accounted for 51.7%.
6. On the frequency of histologic types by Lever et al, the solid type (53.6%) was most common histologic pattern, followed by the infiltrative (19.6%), cystic (8.9%), adenoid (7.1%), keratotic(2.6%), sebaceous(1.8%) morphea-like(2.7%),
superficial
(1.8%), basosquamous(0.9%), bowenoid (0.9%).
7. Recurrence was noted in 13.4% (15 cases) and most frequent in the infiltrative type of histologic pattern. These results demonstrated that BCC is frequent skin carcinoma in the elderly person and develop usually on the sun-exposed area of
out-door
workers, and solid type is most common and infiltrative types may be related to high recurrence.
8. Pigment deposit in the tissue was found in 41 cases(37%).
